Snap Enforces Australia’s Teen Social Media Ban, Shares Rise Modestly
Snap Inc. (SNAP) shares edged higher in early trading after the company announced plans to comply with Australia's new social media restrictions for users under 16. Starting December 10, underage accounts will face deactivation after a three-year grace period.
The Snapchat parent is implementing multiple age verification methods, including bank account validation through Australia's ConnectID system, government ID checks, and facial age estimation via Singapore-based k-ID technology. Privacy concerns are addressed through a minimal data approach—Snap will only receive binary confirmation of age eligibility without accessing personal information.
